অহংকারী অসুর রাজা হিরণ্যকশিপু কঠোর তপস্যা করে বর পেয়েছিল—তাকে না মানুষ মারতে পারবে–না পশু,না দিনে মরবে–না রাতে ,না ঘরে মরবে –না বাইরে,না কোনো অস্ত্রে মরবে না সস্ত্রে।নিজেকে অমর ভেবে সে ঈশ্বরবিদ্বেষী হয়ে উঠল। কিন্তু তার নিজের ছেলে প্রহ্লাদ ছিল বিষ্ণুর পরম ভক্ত।বারবার অত্যাচার করেও প্রহ্লাদের ভক্তি ভাঙতে পারল না হিরণ্যকশিপু। এক সন্ধ্যায় সে গর্জে উঠল—“বল, তোর বিষ্ণু কোথায়?”প্রহ্লাদ বলল— “তিনি সর্বত্র আছেন।” হঠাৎ স্তম্ভ ফেটে বেরিয়ে এল ভয়ংকর রূপ—অর্ধ-মানুষ, অর্ধ-সিংহ। ভগবান বিষ্ণুর নরসিংহ অবতার এবং তিনি যখন হিহিরণ্যকশিপুকে বধ করেন তখন না ছিল দিন, না রাত— গোধূলি বেলা।না ঘরে, না বাইরে— দোরগোড়ায়।না অস্ত্রে না কোনো সস্ত্রে— নিজের নখ দিয়ে নরসিংহ বধ করেছিলেন হিরণ্যকশিপুকে এবং প্রহ্লাদকে আর্শীবাদ করে তাকে রাজা করেন। এভাবেই ভক্তির জয় ও অহংকারের পতন ঘটে।
