According to Hindu beliefs, on this sacred day the Sun God (Surya Dev) moves from Sagittarius to Capricorn and visits his son, Shani Dev, the ruler of the Capricorn zodiac sign. This rare father–son meeting symbolizes harmony, forgiveness, and balance in relationships.
Makar Sankranti also marks the end of winter, the beginning of Uttarayan, and the arrival of a new harvest season. Devotees take holy river baths, donate food and clothes, fly colorful kites, and prepare traditional sweets to celebrate prosperity and new beginnings.
In the Mahabharata era, Bhishma Pitamah chose this auspicious day to leave his mortal body, making Makar Sankranti even more sacred. The festival represents the victory of light over darkness and positivity over negativity.
