⁣⁣समुद्र मंथन की पौराणिक कथा में देवताओं और असुरों ने मिलकर अमरता का अमृत प्राप्त करने के लिए समुद्र का मंथन किया। मंथन से कई अद्भुत रत्न निकले, जिनमें सबसे मूल्यवान था — अमृत। जब अमृत कलश निकला, तो असुरों ने उसे छीनने की कोशिश की, ताकि वे अमर हो सकें और देवताओं पर विजय प्राप्त कर सकें। तब भगवान विष्णु ने मोहिनी रूप धारण कर असुरों को मोहित किया और अमृत देवताओं को पिला दिया। एक असुर, राहु, ने धोखे से अमृत पी लिया, लेकिन सूर्य और चंद्रमा ने उसकी पहचान कर ली। विष्णु ने तुरंत उसका सिर काट दिया। राहु का सिर अमर हो गया और यही कारण है कि राहु और केतु ग्रहण का कारण माने जाते हैं। यह कथा अमरता की लालसा, छल-कपट और ईश्वरीय न्याय का प्रतीक मानी जाती है।
