India has taken a major leap in hypersonic technology.

On 9 January 2026, DRDO’s Hyderabad-based DRDL laboratory successfully conducted a long-duration ground test of a hypersonic scramjet engine for more than 12 minutes.

A scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) is an air-breathing propulsion system that uses oxygen from the atmosphere and operates at speeds above Mach 5, which is more than five times the speed of sound.

This achievement builds on India’s earlier success in the HSTDV mission, where a Mach 6 hypersonic flight was demonstrated. It is considered a critical step toward future hypersonic missile and space-access technologies.

What are your thoughts on India’s hypersonic progress?
